How Teens View Their Digital Lives [Infographic]

Teens Running Circles Around Parents on Social Media

It seems to be an eternal truth: parents always try to monitor their teens to prevent them from doing stupid, self-destructive things, and the teens always succeed in evading them. The latest iteration is occurring online, with social media, where the kids frolicking with risk-taking abandon right under the noses of their elders.

That’s according to a new survey from McAfee titled “The Digital Divide: How the Online Behavior of Teens is Getting Past Parents.” First of all, teens are spending way more time online than their parents suspect -- five hours a day versus two hours a day, respectively. The same is true of social media in particular: while 48% of parents think their teens check social media daily, the actual proportion is 60%. Just 22% of parents think their teens check social media “constantly,” versus 41% actually doing so.

Parents are trying to supervise teens’ social media use, with 49% installing parental controls and 44.3% saying they know their teens’ passwords. But teens are using a variety of strategies to evade parental supervision, and it seems to be working, judging by the fact that many parents aren’t even aware of what’s going on. Overall 71% of teens say they hide their online activity from their parents, while only 56% of parents are aware of this.

In terms of specific strategies, 53.3% of teens say they clear their browser history, while just 17.5% of parents are aware they’re doing this. 45.9% of teens say they minimize browsers when their parents are around, while just 16.6% of parents are aware this is happening. 18.9% of teens delete inappropriate videos, while just 5.4% of parents have caught on to this. 19.9% of teens manipulate privacy settings to block their parents, with just 8.1% of parents noticing. 21.3% of teens use their phone to access social media, while just 9.7% of parents realize this. And of course there’s always good, old-fashioned lying, with 22.9% of teens resorting to this time-honored strategy, while just 10.5% of parents are aware they’re being lied to.

Gen Z Learns From Parents' Money Mistakes

Generation Z - young people between the ages of 13 and 22 - are learning to handle money by watching their parents struggle through a difficult economy.

A new survey from TD Ameritrade reports that these young people are already saving money ($300, on avearge) and are focused on big financial questions, such as how to afford college.

Why are these young people already taking on such weighty financial issues? The answer seems to be that having come of age during the financial crisis, they were exposed early to the importance of learning how to manage money.

TD Ameritrade reports that generation Z has watched their parents struggling to pay back student loans, which in turn taught them how much of a burden those loans can be. Almost six in 10 parents of generation Z reported taking out student loans, and 43 percent continue to pay them back today. At the same time, about half of those parents are also saving for their own children’s future college educations.

Seeing their parents deal with the difficult economy seems to have had a positive overall effect: Three in four young people said they think saving money is important, and four in ten said they have a budget, which they follow closely. Over half of generation Z respondents surveyed said they would save an extra $500, with an additional 11 percent reporting they would put it toward college costs.

Still, the news isn’t all good. Credit card problems are already cropping up among the 13-to-22 crowd. Among those who have a credit card, over half have carried a balance for over six months, which means racking up interest and more debt, and fewer than one in four routinely pay off their cards each month. Many young people don’t yet have their own savings or checking accounts, which can help them learn how to save and manage accounts.

Not surprisingly, parents played a pivotal role: The better budgeters were more likely to have parents who talked about money with them. Parents, reports TD Ameritrade, “are still the most influential variable when it comes to educating children on basic financial skills.”

Teen Cosmetic Surgery on the Rise

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, teens are undergoing more cosmetic surgery than ever before.

Over the past decade, teen breast enhancement and reduction surgeries have grown by some 200%.

In 2011, almost 250,000 teens underwent cosmetic procedures.

Persistence Is Learned from Fathers

A new study published in the Journal of Early Adolescence found that dads are in a unique position to instill persistence and hope in their children, particularly in the pre-teen and teen years.

Researchers from Brigham Young University analyzed 325 families over a four-year period, when fathers responded to questionnaires regarding their parenting style, and children ages 11 to 14 responded to questions about school performance and attaining goals. Fathers who practiced authoritative parenting, defined as providing feelings of love, granting autonomy and emphasizing accountability to a child, were more likely to have kids who developed the art of persistence, which led to better outcomes in school and lower instances of misbehavior.

Dads who ruled with an iron fist and an authoritarian style (harsher and more punishment-based parenting) had less persistent children.

"Fathers have a direct impact on how children perceive persistence and hope, and how they implement that into their lives," said Randall Day, professor in the School of Family Life at Brigham Young University and co-author of the study.

Day calls these types of dads "heart beat fathers" because of their consistent presence in the ordinary day-to-day interactions with their kids.

Researchers said the study joins a growing body of research that suggests fathers are uniquely important to children's self-regulation and self-esteem.

Kids: Now More Expensive Than Ever

A new report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture finds the cost of raising kids from birth to age 17 has increased by $8,000 in the last two years. This brings the total to a whopping $235,000 for middle-income Americans.

In calculating the cost of raising kids, the USDA considers expenses for everything from housing and food (the two biggest expenses) to education, health care, clothing, transportation, and so on. The estimates for this year are 3.5% higher than those from last year, mainly due to increases in the costs of gas, food, education and child care.

Because the USDA focuses only on the expenses up to age 17, their estimates leave out one gigantic contributor to the cost of raising kids: college education. As every parent knows, these are considerable.
