Tween Girls Susceptible to Mobile Advertising

New research shows that female tweens are highly susceptible to mobile advertising.

Sixty-five percent of girls surveyed said they are likely to buy products and services straight from mobile ads if there is a means to do so. Of those, a whopping 80% of girls say they would buy a product or service right away, while the remaining 20% said they would wait for a special occasion.

Perhaps most disturbing to parents, 27% of respondents they would make their purchase with a credit card, while 48% said they would ask their parents for the necessary funds.

A full 22% of respondents said they always tap on ads they see in mobile apps -- regardless of whether they’re interested in the featured product or service. (A more modest 56% of girls said they reserve their taps for ads featuring products or services that actually interest them.)

The research was done by female tween-targeted mobile ad agency, MobiGirl Media. “The results show that most girls in this demographic do like advertising,” said Jennifer Noonan, MobiGirl Media cofounder, regarding the company’s target audience of 6-to-16-year-olds.

Also of note, the majority of female tweens (53%) said they share “cool” products or services with friends. Of those, 58% said they spread the word in person, while 42% share products and services via text and in-ad share buttons.

As for most desired categories, 48% of respondents favored fashion-related ads, followed by makeup products (21%); toys (12%), apps (11%); and books (8%).

Teen Birth Rate Hit Another Record Low in 2011

The teen birthrate in 2011 set another new record low, according to the latest federal data. The numbers reflect a continued trend downward for teens having babies.

The new rate, 31.3 births per 1,000 women ages 15-19, is about half the 1991 rate of 61.8 births per 1,000 teens, which was an all-time high, according to the National Center for Health Statistics.

The teen birthrate has been dropping steadily since the 1991 peak, save for blips in 2006 and 2007. The new report shows particularly steep drops, with a 25% decline in the overall teen birthrate just since 2007.

Childhood Bullying Increases Risk of Self-Harm in Adolescence

A new study has proven that being bullied during childhood directly increases the likelihood of self- harm in late adolescence.

The analysis, led by researchers from the University of Warwick in association with colleagues at the University of Bristol, highlights that being bullied at primary school age can cause enough distress to significantly increase the risk of self-harming in later adolescence.

Almost 5,000 participants in the Children of the 90s study were assessed for exposure to bullying between seven and ten years of age and later asked whether they had engaged in self-harm at sixteen to seventeen years.

The study found that 16.5% of 16-17 year olds had self-harmed in the previous year, and 26.9% of these did so because they felt as though they 'wanted to die'. Those who were subjected to chronic bullying over a number of years at primary school were nearly five times more likely to self-harm six to seven years later in adolescence.

Professor Dieter Wolke of the University of Warwick explained, "It is further evidence for doing away with the myth that bullying at a young age can be viewed as a harmless rite of passage. I'd like to see clinicians routinely asking children about bullying - from name calling to more physical acts of abuse. The importance of this early intervention should not be understated. If we were able to eliminate bullying, while other exposures remained constant, there would be a potential to prevent 20% of all self-harm cases."

The research was published in the Journal of the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry.

Teens Seeing Less Tobacco in Movies, But More Alcohol

A study of top movies between 1996 and 2009 show fewer tobacco product placements, while the appearance of alcohol increased.

Scientists studied the placement and prevalence of alcohol and tobacco products in 1,400 films that were among the top 100 box-office hits in the U.S. between 1996 and 2009.

According to the researchers, smoking and the appearance of tobacco products dropped during that period, by 42.3 percent in youth rated movies and by 85.4 percent in adult rated movies, while the appearance of alcohol increased.

The scientists credit the decline in movie smoking products to the Master Settlement Agreement (MSA) in 1998, which forced the tobacco industry to reign in some of its marketing tactics and fund anti-smoking advocacy groups, which also curbed the appearance of smoking in films.

However, the same wasn't true for alcohol. In fact, during the study period, it shows that alcohol brand product placement went up  in youth rated movies from 80 to 145 each year.

A 2012 analysis from six European countries states that teens who watch movies with advertisements regarding alcohol are more likely to binge drink. Still, the study didn't confirm that the drinking on screen was linked to adolescent's habits. However, researchers conclude that teens who watch drinking sceens are more likely to imitate what they see.

The study was published in the journal JAMA Pediatrics.

YouTube at Eight: Still Growing

YouTube just turned eight-years-old and the social networking video site keeps growing. YouTube users now upload 100 hours of video every minute (that's over four days of new video each minute!), up from 72 hours per minute this time last year (and 48 hours per minute in 2011.)

Over 1 billion people visit YouTube monthly, which amounts to almost one out of every two people on the Internet.

One Third of Millennials Regret Going to College

Here’s an indication of how burdensome student loans have become: About one-third of millennials say they would have been better off working, instead of going to college and paying tuition.

That’s a according to a new Wells Fargo study which surveyed 1,414 millennials between the ages of 22 and 32. More than half of them financed their education through student loans, and many say that if they had $10,000 the “first thing” they’d do is pay down their student loan or credit card debt.

That’s no surprise when you consider student borrowing topped the $100 billion threshold for the first time in 2010, and total outstanding loans exceeded $1 trillion for the first time in 2011.  Student loan debt now exceeds credit card debt in the U.S. which stands at about $798 billion.

The problem sometimes is that not all college educations are worth their cost since they can’t guarantee a high-paying job to help pay off that student debt. A report from the National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys says the rising student debt problem can have a bad impact on the economy. Even in the best of economic times when jobs are plentiful, young people with considerable debt burdens end up delaying life-cycle events such as buying a car, purchasing a home, getting married and having children.

Teens, Social Media, and Privacy

According to a new study by Pew Internet, teens are sharing a wide range of information about themselves on social media sites. However, few teens embrace a fully public approach to social media. Instead, they take an array of steps to restrict and prune their profiles, and their patterns of reputation management on social media vary greatly according to their gender and network size.

Pew conducted a survey of 802 teens that examines teens’ privacy management on social media sites, and found that:

* Teens are sharing more information about themselves on social media sites than they did in the past. For the five different types of personal information that Pew measured in both 2006 and 2012, each is significantly more likely to be shared by teen social media users in the most recent survey.

• Teen Twitter use has grown significantly: 24% of online teens use Twitter, up from 16% in 2011.

• 60% of teen Facebook users keep their profiles private, and most report high levels of confidence in their ability to manage their settings.

• Teens are increasingly sharing personal information on social media sites, a trend that is likely driven by the evolution of the platforms teens use as well as changing norms around sharing.
     - 91% post a photo of themselves, up from 79% in 2006.
     - 71% post their school name, up from 49%.
     - 71% post the city or town where they live, up from 61%.
     - 53% post their email address, up from 29%.
     - 20% post their cell phone number, up from 2%.

• Older teen social media users (ages 14-17), are more likely to share certain types of information on the profile they use most often when compared with younger teens (ages 12-13).
     - Photos of themselves on their profile (94% older teens vs. 82% of younger teens)
     - Their school name (76% vs. 56%)
     - Their relationship status (66% vs. 50%)
     - Their cell phone number (23% vs. 11%)

• 16% of teen social media users have set up their profile to automatically include their location in posts.

Teens Cooling on Facebook but Warming to Twitter

Some teens are growing tired of the excessive sharing and “drama” on Facebook and more are turning to sites like Twitter and Instagram to express themselves, according to a new study.

“Many teens expressed waning enthusiasm for Facebook,” the Pew Research Center said in a newly released study, based on interviews with 800 teens conducted between July and September last year.

They complained of too many adults on the site, the inane details shared by friends and the “drama” on Facebook, which they find draining, according to the study, conducted by the Pew Internet Project.

“The stress of needing to manage their reputation on Facebook also contributes to the lack of enthusiasm,” the researchers said. On Twitter and Instagram, however, teens felt free from the social expectations and constraints of Facebook, according to the study.

Most teens remain active on Facebook, because it’s “an important part of overall teen socializing,” the study said. But almost a quarter of online teens now use Twitter, up from 16 percent in 2011.

Their disillusionment with Facebook may have something to do with the way they’re using it. Some 70 percent said they are friends with their parents on the site, and only 5 percent restrict what their parents can see, according to the study. So Facebook is probably not a haven for illicit discussion.
